Number Eight

[soft ambient music that feels like gliding on a twinkling river plays underneath the following words)
tonight my next door neighbor,
who just lost her lifelong companion --
to the kind of tumor they found too late --
she came to sit with me on my stoop.
she didn't make a sound,
but instead hung her wet nose over my half-empty water glass
until i held it up to her mouth,
tilting it more and more
while she drank and drank
until it was full-empty.
i draped my arms around her neck.
both of us still thirsty.
both of us still grieving.
do you know this grief?
i think you know it.
whatever the shape of your loss,
whenever the grief comes to you,
sit with it.
drape your arms around its neck.
give it water.
